Bowling Green State University
We know that an online education at BGSU is incredibly valuable and rewarding,
but don't take our word for it. Hear what the students themselves
who have participated in online courses and degree programs at BGSU
have to say about their experience.
“The instructional staff is second to none and I would challenge any college or University to find better.” Ken McCreight - BGSU Online Graduate
Kerry
Foster - BGSU Online ATE Program - Although I've never written a testimonial before, I can tell you that the online
program at BGSU is the best thing that happened to me. I truly am
a believer in online learning and recommend it to anyone to try,
however, you have to be disciplined enough to make it a success.
I think that's why it appeals to so many "nontraditional" learners.
"Many
of the students in my classes are nontraditional students going
through the same things as I am."
I have a husband, 2 children in school, a 40 hour a week
job, and college just didn't seem to be an option for me because of
time restraints. I thought that if Ididn't have to commit to a certain
time sitting in a classroom every week, I may be able to complete my
degree. Then I talked to Bur Shilling who explained to me what an online
class really consisted of, so I tried one, and much to my disbelief,
I loved it. The class was very thought provoking, and interacting on
discussion boards with other classmates made the learning an experience
that will benefit me more than I'll ever know. This new way of learning, which I call "transformational learning," has afforded me a way to finish a degree I started years ago, keep my family
happy, and strive for a bachelors degree - all at the same time. Many
of the students in my classes are nontraditional students going through
the same things as I am. That's part of the learning process. Homework
assignments, chapter readings, tests, etc. are all spelled out in the
syllabus ahead of time allowing for individuals to more or less work
at their own pace during the week while keeping on schedule with the
appropriate due dates. I can actually obtain my bachelors degree online
from BGSU at my convenience. Thank you BGSU!
"...doing my homework from Malibu."
Antonio Castrillo - BGSU Online BLS Program - My experience with the online classes offered at BGSU has been remarkable. I currently have a job that requires me to travel and the online availability is amazing. I have been in California since the beginning of the semester, doing my homework from Malibu. While the scenery on the West Coast is great, I appreciate the chance to receive my degree from BGSU via online classes.
Linda Cooper Smith - BGSU Online ATE Program - When I made the decision to return to college, there were lots of butterflies in my stomach. Would I be able to handle taking online classes? Would the technology be confusing? How does it feel to interact with teachers and other students in the virtual world?
"I
could work at my own pace and at times
when it was convenient for
me."
Well, for me it turned out to be the perfect solution. I could work at my own pace and at times when it was convenient for me. I enjoyed doing independent research and writing, and I found that it is possible to get to know your fellow students quite well in an online class.
In the Advanced Technological Education Program (which is designed for adult learners who have completed an Associate of Applied Science) I was able to complete my bachelor degree in 1-1/2 years. That would never have happened in a traditional classroom setting.
Sara McLaughlin - BGSU Online BLS Program - I decided to go back to college after having my daughter in 2000 which was a life altering event. I felt getting my degree was necessary in order to provide the best for her and my family. The first class I ever took on campus was in the summer of 2002. I was 27 and I have to admit I felt a little out of place. I quickly realized that attending class while working full-time and taking care of a baby was just not going to work for me. My only alternative was to start taking on-line classes.
"BGSU has made getting my degree easy and attainable."
Although I was somewhat intimated by computer based classes I also found it a relief to be able to decide when it was convenient to go on-line. I was able to do projects at my leisure and interact with other non-traditional students on a regular basis. In 2003 I gave birth to my son. Since my classes were on-line I was able to work around his birth on a level I would not have been able to do had I been in a traditional class. I was also able to plan around family vacations and events. Don’t get me wrong, with on-line classes you have to be dedicated, task-oriented and hard working but as long as you stay on track then you make the decision when to go on-line and when to work on projects. In summer of 2008 I will graduate with my degree and I look forward to walking down the aisle with my two children looking on and seeing how important a college education is for me and for their future. BGSU has made getting my degree easy and attainable through their on-line courses. I strongly encourage anyone who is thinking of going back to school to look into the many possibilities BGSU can offer.
